Soup Stop
Cool, crisp weather and a generous bowl of hearty soup. They just go together - and very well, I might add. Now... hot, humid summer days and a bowl of steamy, hot soup - hmmm...not so much! However, tell that to the good folks at The Soup Stop. Where and what is The Soup Stop, you might ask? Well, it is no more, and with good reason. When we lived in a small village in the heart of Cape Breton

A Great "Fall" House
One of my favorite things to do every season is to reaccessorize & make my house feel warm & cozy or light & airy or however that season feels to me.Here's a great house from Country Living that is perfect for Fall & I just wanted to share:I LOVE the wall color in the kitchen. Not too warm, not too cool. (In the magazine it's a hint more olivey. Oh why didn't they list the color?!) Gorgeous. And

The Profiler...
(Skippy...the one who started it all!)Silhouettes...I seem to be seeing them everywhere lately. I guess that's what happens when something is so good. It gets noticed.I have had a love affair with silhouettes for years, but have had extreme difficulty finding any authentic (read, old) ones, except for my beloved Skippy. I remember a few Christmases back, I saw in a holiday magazine (I think it

AMAZING BED TIP - this will change your life!
Above is the Westin Heavenly Bed & for me it's been the model of a perfect bed since I first ran & jumped into one in a Westin hotel room. (It looks THAT inviting: All white, fluffy but tailored, tons of pillows, just barely pulled down so you want to get right in... You pretty much have to jump right into the bed when you walk in the room the first time.) All-white bedding has become almost a

Need a Lift
Does your display look a little blah and boring? Maybe all it needs is a little lift. Giving items height in a display is a designer's trick. Allow me to demonstrate. This display of pumpkins looks good. It's looking better. Now it looks it's best. You can use items you already haveto give height to your display.I like to use candle holders.I love to use vases and urns. How about using a pretty box.(

May the bubble never burst...
May the bubble never burst...every time I utter those words, I laugh aloud. The first time I heard the phrase was on a shopping trip with a good friend. It had been a particularly good day, with many great "deals", and we were marvelling at our luck. Then, my friend happily sang out those words. Apparently, it is a "warning" phrase her mother extols whenever she feels her daughter might be
The nursery
Here are some pictures of my son's nursery. We wanted to give it a nautical feel without it being over-the-top "baby" or themey so the room could easily grow with him. (Okay, okay... In all honesty, since I realize that nurseries are truly for the parents & not the kids, I used it as an outlet to satisfy the nautical kick I was on. ;) We can do that to our kids, right?)We painted tone-on-tone

Entertaining Simple Give-away
When something is really good, it bears repeating: for example, my most recent give-away featuring Matthew Mead's Halloween magazine, and the ten free copies he so graciously gave away. The response was so great, however, that there were more than a few of you left smoothing your feathers in disappointment for not having won a copy. "Not fair", you might have thought. Everybody's Doing It
As I've made my visits around blogland, I've noticed that making your own chalkboard is quite a popular project. Not wanting to be left behind, I purchased a large piece of framed art. I cleaned it well and then covered the "painting" with newspaper. I painted the frame a pretty apple green. I've been wanting to use this color on a project since seeing it at the paint party. It really is a

photo sources: Aga Uk.com Say what? For those who know not of this wondrous brand of stoves, please let me bring you up to speed. An Aga is so much more than a stove. In use since 1922, it is a wondrous source of gentle heat to warm you, a vessel in which to prepare delicious meals for your family, and, perhaps most important of all, an object of beauty (and yes, I can be that shallow). The folks

A Woman's Prerogative
Do you remember a while back, when I tried usingother paint colors besides satin black?Do you remember this homeless tin shelfthat started out a deep red?And then became a lovely tan?Well, I changed my mind. It's a woman's prerogative isn't it?I finally decided where I wanted the shelf,so I had to do a second makeover. This is what it looks like now.I painted the fleur de lis details to show them
Preserving Memories and Traditions.
looking at my scrapbooks with family...I am sentimental. I am also a chronicler. My mum would say I chronicle because I am sentimental, but that is only part of the reason. I would say that I photograph, journal, videotape, scrapbook, and even blog because I have a poor memory. Yes, my memory is poor, yet I love memories. So, I take record of the parts of my life that are important to me. It is

The Price Drop In Miami
Sales prices have come down substantially in Miami Beach, yet some sellers are still asking very high prices for their properties, prices that are high enough to render those properties un-saleable sans a significant price reduction. If there is any doubt, read on and arrive at your own conclusion.A property on North Bay Road in Miami Beach sold 2 days ago for much lower than the asking price. As
Neglected No More
Several months ago, I found a pretty little desk at the thrift store. I didn't really need a desk, but the price was right, so the desk came home with me. I stuck it in an empty corner of the family room. It needed to be painted. It was chipped and dinged and a young artist had carved a pie chart into it. At the time I was going through my "paint everything satin black" phase. But I wasn't sure

Looking Up
I love old buildings! I love the craftsmanship that went into making a building beautiful. I admire the intricacy in the moldings and trim. I'm amazed at the ornate detail in things as small as an elevator button. And one thing that I'm attracted to is the old tin ceilings. It astounds me that such detail and design was put into something that you would have look upward to notice. It is because
Up against a brick wall...
above photo: source unknownExposed brick walls. How do I love these...? Let me count the ways: A good brick wall conjures up a sense of history in a home. The more aged the brick looks, the better.A brick wall needs no adornment. It stands alone, naked, and still looks great.A brick wall is the perfect feature wall. How can your eyes not be drawn to its strength and character?Warm colour is added
A Few Updates...
Just wanted everyone to know that, although I mentioned I would be hosting another great give-away with Matthew Mead this week, we have had to postpone it until next week (technical difficulties). However, the contest will begin next week, and I will give you advance warning: trust me, you don't want to miss out on this one, as there a few extra goodies being thrown into the prize barrel. Ooooo La La!
Most people Spring clean. I Fall build. I don't know what it is about the Fall, but I suddenly get the urge to build items for my home. I'm not sure if it's the nesting instinct left over from having my last three children born in the Fall months. Or if it's the desire to have a nice home for the holidays. Or maybe, I no longer feel the need to work on outside projects, so I can devote my time

The Housing Problem
The problem with real estate in the Miami area is not only that there are too few buyers, but also that getting a mortgage loan is now very difficult for almost everyone. The banks, which created this mortgage mess in the first place, with the help of unscrupulous mortgage brokers, are now giving loans to only the most highly qualified people. Down payments have to be at least 20%, but are often
Sunday Dinner...
Ever since I was a young girl, Sunday dinner has been a tradition held close to my heart. With five siblings, mealtime was often served dine and dash, with little emphasis placed on the intricacies of setting a table or the Norman Rockwell image of a family gathering to slowly dine and reconnect over a meal. Indeed, protecting one's food from nipping brothers was more of a priority than sitting

The Wow Factor...
(my girlie wearing glittered glasses and chatting on the phone...oblivious to me!)As you may know, I love to take the ordinary, and inexpensive, and make it extra special. I glean inspiration from magazines and decorating books, and often look at the ideas and think: a) how can I duplicate that on my budget and/or accessibility from my small town and b) how can I tweak it and make it better, or

Seasons Change...
Well, the boxes were finally cracked on my fall decorations, and the first place I addressed was my fireplace mantel. Considering I hadn't dressed it up for summer, a change was long over-due. My fireplace is visible from every corner and is truly the focal point of my living room (considering my puny television is hidden away in an armoire...sooo passé). Thus, the time was right for a little

Stop and Stare...
In the world of design, some things are just so jaw-dropping in their beauty and creativity. Mind you, it often takes a little less to dazzle me, as my expectations are fairly simple. I want imaginative, I want pretty, and it has to make my heart do a little flip. Cost is irrelevant (you know what I mean), while thinking outside of the proverbial box always impresses me. Here are a few things

A Great Combination
I bought an almost new lamp, complete with the shade, at the thrift store for $6. It had an antique brass finish. Of course I bought it knowing that I'd give it a spray paint makeover. I'm sorry to say that I didn't take a "before" picture. I actually never thought that I'd do a post on it. I didn't want to bore you with another post of "Look at my thrift find that I painted black." (YAAAAWN!)In

Benefits of Building a Green Home

I Went to a Garden Party

I decided to use grass for the centerpieces. I thought about growing wheat grass, but then came up with an even easier idea. . .buying sod. I just needed something to put the grass in. I could have bought baskets but, at my

Falling for fall...
During our trip to Prince Edward Island, I rediscovered my love affair with fall. I wasn't exactly prepared for it, but it came rushing back to me via visions of pumpkins, hay bales and corn stalks. Thrown into the sea of fall inspiration, was the veritable bounty of fresh harvest vegetables - acorn and papaya squash; beets; baby, new potatoes; zucchinis and all things green and delicious. The

A Perfect Get-away...
Thanks to everyone who left us such thoughtful wishes for our anniversary! Now, I do try to stick to mainly decorating topics, but I also treat my blog as a journal of sorts for me to look back on and remember what has gone on in my life. I have never been one to have a diary (too much work), but I do find it helpful to jog my memory by sometimes writing about the "minutiae" of my little life. So

Brick by brick...
What's a fireplace without a little brick? Well, if your brick is ugly, chances are it's not much of a fireplace at all. What's a girl to do?Well, there are many options: bring it all down (but not with a huff and a puff...) and start anew; resurface using a great natural stone like slate, or a stacked or field stone; clad the fireplace in a great wooden cover up and mantel; or, for those on a

Happee Anniversary!!
My wedding anniversary has me thinking. What brings couples together? What constitutes a happy marriage, do husbands have to be soulmates, and how did I get so lucky? I love my husband. He is perfect for me, but he's not perfect, nor am I (really!). I don't care who you have, if you say he is perfect, I will not believe you. Just the inherent differences between men and women makes the male

It's been great to take a break from the basic black routine. I've enjoyed painting with new colors. And after all the inspiration from the party, I'm looking forward to trying a few more. But, for those who share my appreciation for great storage, a well-planned mudroom just can't be beat. Bad boys, bad boys...what you gonna do...???
It seems our sons share their father's and my sarcastic sense of humour. Perhaps it is a survival skill, but it is a skill they have mastered nonetheless. Humour is big in our home, and the drier the better.Apparently our boys also like to skulk away with my digital camera, without my knowledge, and take funny photographs of each other. One of their seemingly favourite poses is the tough guy

Radiant Heat - a good option for an energy efficient home
Many energy efficient home designs include radiant floor heat. More efficient than forced-air heating or baseboard heat, radiant heat delivers several benefits to homeowners: less allergens (circulated through the home via the heat systems ductwork) meaning better air quality, reduced electricity usage and fossil fuel usage, and evenly distributed heat at floor levels with little energy loss

A garden get-away...
Now that my daughter's playhouse is up and running, I find myself wishing that I had a secret hide-away of my own. A place to relax and read...think uninterruptedly. Doesn't that sound heavenly? Here would be my pick of the perfect garden get-away:photos: Canadian Home and Country magazineOops...I forgot to mention nap...of course it would need a great place to do that! This is definitely a

Why Should You Hire an Architect?
We’ve all done it…browsed through the section of standard floor plans in a magazine, critiquing each one against our family’s wants and needs in a home. There are literally thousands out there, some free, some for sale. The problem is that finding the perfect plan for you is like finding a needle in a haystack. If and when you do find a great plan, you have a host of other considerations to make

I Need An Intervention!
Several years ago I decorated my home with shabby/cottage decor. Back then I would buy or paint everything a beautiful shade of cream and then distress it. I love the cottage look, but I found that as I made home improvements, my tastes began to change. I held on to some of my shabby pieces and put them away in my storage room. The other day I came across a few pieces and decided there was just

It was called yellow...
photo: J.CrewI have written about the colour yellow before. It is a colour that I am well familiar with, having used it in my previous homes with little restraint. However, it occurred to me recently, that I have very little yellow anymore. I think it is simply a symptom of overuse. While I have tired a bit of using yellow in my home, I still light up when I encounter it in other's homes or in
Words of Appreciation
A week ago I stood in the store holding two pieces of wood and thinking about what I could blog. Is that strange?!? I probably should have been thinking of what to make for dinner, but thinking about blogging is so much more fun. I thought about making a quick, inexpensive, and easy project that anyone could do. I thought it would be exciting to see what others would do with my idea. I could have

For those of you that weren't correct, you still get an A for trying. And Msfears, you get an A for making me laugh at this answer:The crown was definitely a torture device in the dark ages.Jackie from Empty Nest Full Life was correct! Her answer was: I think

POP QUIZ
Isn't this a wonderful display? It's nicely balanced, and the repetition of the colors black, cream and apple green is pleasing to the eye.EVERYTHING in this display (except the fresh flowers) came from the thrift store.Very few things look like they did when they were purchased.Of course, you've already guessed that a can of spray paint was involved in the transformation. The candle holders

Summertime...when the living was easy...
photo: Matthew Mead StyleSummer, in many ways, is so much more than it was when I was a girl. Summer in 2008 has exploded into something that is both wonderful and rather ridiculous, depending on how you look at it. We've come so far since the summers I spent as a child, and like everything else, what we are left with, is what we have created...When I was a girl in the seventies, summer just was

Jalan-Jalan di Hari Minggu
Kemarin Minggu tgl 10 Agustus, sebenernya aku masih agak pusing. Migren semalam belum begitu sembuh.

It seems the best place to be is indoors, and this lack of sunlight is clouding my imagination and creativity. You will likely pay the price for this dullness...I did receive a few questions about my kitchen and playhouse

Under Five Bucks & Under Five Minutes!
I went to "Wallyworld" the other day. It's not a store that I frequent, but it was close and it sells spray paint. I found myself inspired while walking down the craft aisle. I thought you might enjoy a craft that's quick and easy. And since everyone has access to the "mart", it's something you can buy and make this weekend.I purchased a small wood plaque for .97 centsand a wood letter for $1.88.
Silver Park Project, Missoula, Montana
If you live in or around Missoula, Montana or are planning a trip there sometime this fall, be sure to plan a visit to see Silver Park, a 14 ½ acre park under construction located on an old mill site along the Clark Fork River (right) in Missoula’s city district. The riverfront, while gorgeous, doesn’t have a lot of things to shelter visitors from the sun and elements. Missoula engineer Jennifer

All Boxed Up
Isn't it interesting how you can find yourself drawn to certain objects, but you're not exactly sure why. I am naturally drawn to all sorts of containers---things that contain other things. I like suitcases, picnic baskets, bowls, vases, regular baskets, trays, trunks, and old wooden boxes. My husband usually just rolls his eyes when he sees me migrating toward these things. But he's a patient
Where's Summer...and a Give-Away...!!!
We are on week three of nearly unrelenting, rainy weather. It is fair to say I have summer doldrums, and everything feels damp, dismal, and the walls of my home seem to be closing in on me. Summer projects are at a virtual standstill, and although there are inside jobs awaiting, I can't seem to inspire myself to do them. The temperatures are even quite cool, and combined with the damp, I am

It Was "Mint" To Be
Some time ago I was asked to bring after-dinner mints to a small family gathering. It was a rather unusual request, but I'm not one to say, "Oh please, please, let me bring more!" I am, however, one to do the unexpected. I mean, most people would just buy some nice mints and pour them in a pretty little crystal bowl and call it good. Not me! I like to use the opportunity to give myself another

Isn't it wonderful how even the smallest of light can warm up a room. I enjoy having small lights on in my home all day long. So it wouldn't surprise you to know that if I find a small light at the thrift store, I usually buy it. This is my newest acquisition.Oh yes, you know that it's going to be transformed with spray paint.I'm actually going to give it a whole new look by replacing the socket

A Kitchen Revisited...
I know many of you have seen my kitchen before. However, I am participating in Julia's (of the fabulous blog, Hooked on Houses) house tour (make sure you head on over there...after leaving me a comment, of course), and I thought I'd give her readers a quick look around my favourite room in our house. I also figured, you don't see a kitchen with blue cabinets that often, so here it is: My husband

Don't Judge an Object by It's Color
Some people see the obvious, while others see the potential.Let's do a test. What do you see in this picture?Do you see a lovely apothecary jar, filled with flowering bulbs, surrounded by two hideous objects that look like they were once decorations in a cheap Las Vegas hotel? (I wonder how many weirdo's are going to search my blog because of those last four words?)Or do you see two beautifully

With a rebel yell...
Well, we're back...early...and a little bit soggy. A "half-glass full" attitude was definitely needed to smile through an entirely rainy, inaugural camping trip! Luckily, I love it that much! Camping, that is... Luckily, we had great company- my brother and his family - and we all get along famously! So, after settling in and gobbling down a quick, but tasty (pre-planned) supper of pork chops,
Kenali Tanda Segitiga Pada Kemasan Plastik

Murphy's Table
Murphy's law states, "Whatever can go wrong will."Meet Murphy's table. It looks innocent enough. A well built little table that someone else had done a makeover on. It was just a few dollars at the thrift store. You would likely buy it if you saw it, right? Have a Seat in My Foyer
Look at my Pottery Barn chair. I snatched it up at a thrift store for three bucks a few months back. I had no clue where I'd put it, but who could pass up that price! When I got it home I noticed that one back leg had been broken, but it's been repaired well and is nice and solid.Last week after I moved my table into the foyer, the chair that was there looked out of place. So I washed the cover

In my ideal dream world, I would have a big decorating budget. Part of that budget would be used to fill my home with fresh bouquets. I didn't need an unlimited supply of money. All I needed was a little creative

Change With That Sale
Look what I found on the garden clearance!Isn't it a fun accent? Although I like the rusty finish, it doesn't matchthe other garden accents in my front yard. So there's just one thing to do---get out the spray paint! Can you guess which color?I like it even more now! It's lost it's rustic qualities and has found it's elegance. It looks so nice on my front porch, with the fake grass that I don't

A pretty, little playhouse!!
It's time for the big unveiling... It is as complete as it will ever be, and I have to admit I/we are as happy as can be with how it turned out! As I have mentioned before, I have wanted this for our daughter long before she even came along! To me, a playhouse is the quintessential little girl's dream, as it was for me as a child. Since I didn't have one, I always vowed our daughter would someday
